So you preordered an indie book.

How actually receiving it sometimes works with online retailers.

The Sudden Not-Available

It’s publication day and you don’t see the book that you preordered in your mailbox! You go online and check, and the status of the book says “not-available” or “back ordered”…

What it usually means

It might just mean that the online retailer didn’t prestock the book (happens to us smaller book and publisher chums, especially if we have “no return” policies with Ingram). So the retailer needs time to actually order it for you, and they want to be sure you still want it.

Confirm your order (again)

Sometimes the online retailer wants to confirm you still want the book. So you have to go through some additional steps. Sometimes they cancel the order! This means you need to reorder it (and they’ll confirm that you were not charged).

Feel good once again

Not only did you secure your order, you made sure an indie author secured a book sale. Happy reading!

καλό μήνα! Happy new month, and also a happy name day on Sept 1st for Aphrodite, aka Venus.

Yesterday I did a cover reveal on the prelaunch page of my upcoming project on Kickstarter: To Love Like Venus, a literary novel in a near-future cyberpunk setting that’s all about love, relationships and how we cope with its heights and disappointments, whether partner, ideals or the symbols that become our children.

Above is a look at the beautiful cover by Baris Sehri.

It was a pleasure working with Baris. It was the first cover I had designed for a novel, a new journey from the fabulous sequential artists I’ve worked with, as you can see in Event Horizon (and how I love covers since that book had 3). Baris’ design method had me deeply revisiting the major themes of the novel, and in the process clarifying how I would present this to an audience. This is not always an easy task for a writer; we get lost in the details of our stories, we obsess. Getting a cover designer to bring a painted metaphor of the book—and if not that, then a hits-the-mark nudge for a reader to pick it up, ain’t easy. Baris worked with my impressions of what this book was about, I stepped away, I got something unexpected and hitting a home run. So much so, I went back into the novel to strengthen certain aspects that his cover design revealed in it by forcing me to dig deep. It’s a great example of the harmony of true collaboration. Thank you Baris. Check out the other works he’s done at https://www.sehribookdesign.com/ When I saw his website, I already saw my book cover.

If you’re a scroller: consider clicking on notify-me-on-launch on the Kickstarter page. It’s a cost-free gesture. The beauty of Kickstarters is making the art, but it’s also an opportunity for you to make sure publishing is filled with quality stories told by the rainbow of human beings living on this planet. Crowdfunding is my favorite way to do it. On the backer end, you get discounts and goodies not available in regular pre-orders.

We’re happy to share that we’ll be releasing Stephanie Nina Pitsirilos’s August 10th 2022 lecture “Jean, Janus & Comic Book Realism” delivered at the Chautauqua Institution upon receiving the Janus Prize, in both chapbook and ebook form. Chock-full of craft, comic book realism, family history, historical notes for Puerto Rico and Nuyorico, and astrophysics from a fangirl–the lecture is an exploration of literary craft and labels that exist within, and in defiance of, the eye of an observer.

While weaving in and out of what is fiction and what is family memoir in one particular story, the lecture also demonstrates pop culture as a new modern myth in language and experience, the vehicle of science fiction in mediums of comics and prose, and different faucets of marginalization, including in publishing, with a particular focus on the Latino/a/x/e and Puerto Rican/Nuyorican experience.

Great for classroom reads of “Jean”, those with an interest in Latinx literature, and fans of small press and chapbooks.

This printed version includes reference notes for cited works and pop culture, much asked for at Chautauqua.

Publishing October 2023.

Chapbook: ISBN 978-1-958077-05-4

Ebook (pdf): ISBN 978-1-958077-06-1
